R.I.P. Eddie

Gone too soon. Enclosed is a rare live show before the first LP. Thanks to the original uploader.

Notes:

A high quality soundboard recording of the Pasadena Civic

Center show from October 15, 1977. Van Halen played only one more live

show before the first album was released.

The mixing is pretty raw. But, this is a good representation of the

band from the pre- VH1 days.

Thanks for that. Just because it seems appropriate to
the recording you've shared, here's something I posted
elsewhere for a few friends (and referring to the first
time I ever heard the VH track "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love"):

I probably should have been familiar with Van Halen even
before their first record came out, but that somehow never
happened. At the time, we knew of them as a local SGV band
making the rounds at clubs and back yard parties. Supposedly,
David Lee Roth’s dad or someone lived on the next street over
from my parents, and in any case Kevin Brink’s friend Steve
De Groot was related to the two brothers. That’s how I ended
up with a speaker cabinet that had belonged to Eddie Van
Halen and an Ampeg V2 bass amp that had belonged to
Michael Anthony. Some of us used to loiter around KROQ when
it was still in Pasadena, and I remember seeing a couple of
the band members materialize, champagne in hand, to be
interviewed on the Rodney show. Anyway, time goes by, and me
and Jim House are once again ditching class. We’re in his car
parked just out of eyeshot from our high school’s storied
East Lot), drinking beers, smoking cigarettes, listening to
the radio, and pretty much nodding off. Then we’re snapped
awake by a guitar sound like we've literally never heard.
We turn to each other and say, “Who the FUCK is this?”
